Current Characters in Route: Royce Bracket, Tobias
Character
Name: Rider (Iskander, Alexander the Great)
Series: Fate/Zero
Timeline: End of Episode 23
Canon Resource Links: Fate/Zero Rider
Personality:
The first word anyone would associate with Rider is large. His stature is giant, his voice is echoing, and his personality would bring lesser men to their knees, or at least to tears trying to combat it. This is fitting, given that he was the man destined to rule all of Asia and made a damn good effort at it. He holds the title "King of Conquerors" and takes pride in it, because he did not earn that title lightly.
Pride in what he's done is a central point for Rider - he lectures Saber over wanting to change the fate of her kingdom. He says that he may regret what happened after his death, he may shed tears over it, but he would never undo his actions. To dream the impossible dream - to dream bigger than anyone else - is his goal. To reach the endless ocean, Oceanus - to stand on its shores and leave his footprints on the beach of the ocean that was at the edge of the world - that was his greatest goal. And while he never made it there in his lifetime, he still dreams about it.
The dream is real enough that even in death he and his Endless Army, the Ionian Hetairoi, are able to hold the belief that they will one day reach it in enough detail that they create a Reality Marble - a bounded field of reality that can draw whoever's nearby into it. Given that normally a Servant like him wouldn't be able to create a Reality Marble, it shows just how strong his dream is. He claims that a king must dream bigger, must be greedier, than any other person. A king's life must be lived in extremes, and given how he plunges from one emotion to the next - happiness, anger, disgust - he fully embodies a life of extremes. A drinking party may be fun, but when he sees someone like Saber espouse ideals he finds intolerable, he has the right - in fact, the duty - to become disgusted and to become angry over it. A king in his eyes must be everything that his followers can find envious, must embody the extreme of everything both good and evil - otherwise no one would ever want to become a king.
The Ionian Hetairoi shows another aspect of Rider - his utter devotion to his dream and his philosophies, and the bond formed with his subjects. Given that a Noble Phantasm is emblematic of a Servant's legend, life, and personality - the fact that his bond is his greatest weapon is both incredibly unusual and incredibly indicative of his personality. In fact, everyone in the Ionian Hetairoi is a Servant - and yet rather than being summoned on their own, they pledge their loyalty to him, and add their strength to his own. Even his horse is strong and noble and has a bond with enough strength to be a Servant.
He still wants to conquer the world, and the fact that the world is much larger than what he was used to doesn't bother him all that much. Despite Waver thinking that he's too small and weak to be a proper Master for Rider, in Rider's opinion only someone who would ride out on the battlefield with him would be worthy of being his Master. He has no time or words for cowards, only scorn for those who would be so shameful. Rider, while being a king and a conqueror, does not see a reason to hide behind pretty ceremony and fancy words. Sure, he can be rude. Sure, he has failings. But living to the fullest and inspiring others to live that way too - that is the way to true immortality. He does not want lands or wealth - he wants the hearts of the people.
In that respect, Rider has succeeded. His military prowess is unmatched, but more than that he listens to and respects each and every person he meets unless they show him a reason to dislike them. He treats people like equals, and does his best not to underestimate anyone because of their gender or where they're from or what path they walk. Even Gilgamesh, one of the most self-absorbed characters and arguably one of the biggest dicks in canon, considers Rider a worthy enough opponent to use his personal weapons on - which is an extremely rare occurrence. Rider does not care for divisions between royalty and commoners, powerful and weak, or Heroic Spirits and normal humans. In his eyes, everyone starts on an even footing. For it's these sort of extremes, this balancing act, that allows people to rise and fall on their own merits and not the circumstances that are simply handed to them. Every person has the potential for greatness - but it takes a strong leader to bring that out.
And yet, being the King of Conquerors, while much of his personality, is not the entirety of it. He is a man who died while still young - and while that wasn't uncommon in his age, the fact that his life's goal remained unfulfilled makes him somewhat of a tragic figure. The modern world is so big compared to what he was used to - it's both exciting and somewhat terrifying. As much as he likes to keep up a positive attitude, he's not immune to darker moods. Anger, disgust… while he hides these things he still is just a man. A heroic spirit, yes, but still a man with very human feelings.
He's somewhat of a caricature and realizes that, and cultivates that intentionally. He is supposed to be a hero! A great symbol for people to look at and stand with. But he gets bored easily, always moving place to place. He tells Waver not to be in such a hurry to grow up or to get going, but he himself is the kind of person who just can't stay in one place and be satisfied. He has a tendency to minimize things that he doesn't think are important, even if they're important to other people. He tells Waver that the Grail War won't be the most important thing in his life, and while he says that to try to make a larger point he doesn't really take into account what it means to Waver. He tells Saber that her way of ruling is wrong, even though she believes it with all of her heart. In some ways he seems more aligned with Gilgamesh's tendency to brush aside things that he doesn't like and incorporate only what he wants in his worldview.
Rider also tends to have an attitude of "me (and my allies) against the world". While he doesn't treat his foes or unknown people with malice and in fact is jovial with them, he still sees everything as a competition. He must win, no matter the cost, and he has to do it his way or else it doesn't even count. If the world turns his back on him, he fights back. If the world faces him, he fights back. While he's a somewhat honorable fighter he still does not see the point in not setting forth to conquer everything. It doesn't belong to him yet, but it might some day, and he longs for the day to fight everything and win on his own merits as a ruler and a leader.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Physical fitness. Rider is used to long campaigns and fights, and keeps in shape. Trekking through the wilderness of the Pokemon world will be no problem for him.
+ Tactics. An extremely capable commander and fighter in mortal life and an equally capable fighter as a Servant, Rider possesses the ability to think on his feet and come up with a plan to defeat his opponents.
+ Charisma. A generally jovial personality and a natural sense of confidence and leadership allow him to make friends easily - at least with those sorts of people not put out by his forceful personality.
+ Positive attitude. The sort of person to pick a friend up (literally) and help him cheer up, Rider doesn't despair easily - and he makes sure that his companions don't, either. This also applies to a 'big brother' attitude - taking in the people he thinks are both beneficial to him and who need it, and making sure they're looked after.
- Agility. Rider is not the fastest of people. Considering his bulk he doesn't have the greatest of ease moving around on foot.
- Pride. While a very famous and capable person, Rider still can be caught off-guard. Underhanded tactics are the easiest for this, because his pride as a warrior makes him not expect those sorts of tactics as much.
- Anger. Tying in to the above, Rider is somewhat quick to anger when he perceives a slight. While he does not really see this as a drawback, only a part of 'living to extremes', it's still a rather glaring personality flaw.
- Problems being alone. While not totally incapable of being on his own, Rider is used to being followed by at least one person. Being on his own is a new experience for him, and while he isn't the sort of person to despair about it he has a little trouble not being in some sort of war party, even if he's not actually at war.

[The large man on the video screen looks… well. Somewhat frustrated. The Growlithe that sits on his lap looks equally aggravated, back straight as it stands at attention.]
I imagine most of you have heard of this… 'Team Rocket' that's been snatching Pokemon from their trainers. If any of you have any information on them, I'd ask you pass it along to me.
[He slams his fist against the tree behind him, the wood creaking.]
These sorts of villains cannot be allowed to roam free! They are the very antithesis of what a trainer should embody - cowardly, dishonest, and the breakers of bonds!
[His expression darkens, and his back straightens as he glares down the video feet.]
Hear me, members of Team Rocket! I challenge each and every one of you to battle! Be it with Pokemon, swords, or our bare hands - I will crush your organization to dust until you are nothing more than a distant memory! I, Iskander, King of Conquerors, swear this upon my honor and the honor of the entire Ionian Hetairoi!
[The feed ends there.]
Third Person Sample:
Orthrus was a fine dog, certainly good one enough for the use of a king, but he was a little… small. Not that Iskander minded small - Waver had been small but a more than worthy retainer. No, his concern was more… practical than that. He was trying to figure out how to find something to ride - he couldn't well keep his title of Rider if he had no sort of chariot or steed!
"Come here, boy." He patted his knee, and the Growlithe jumped up on it, nuzzling into his chest. He pulled out his Pokegear, careful not to break it in his large hands, and opened up the Pokedex. "Let's see if we can find something… no. No. No…"
So many entries! He'd seen computers, and knew what they were in some aspects, but nothing this small, fast, or with so much storage! He pressed a few buttons to see how he could sort things. None of the options seemed to make too much sense to him, so he kept scrolling through. He sighed, and Orthrus peeked over at the Pokegear.
"All of these creatures are too small. I don't think they can bear my weight -"
He hovered over an entry. 'Tauros'. "Hmm… maybe. I wonder, could the technology to create a chariot exist here? If so, I think we have our answer, boy!" He made a motion to clap the Growlithe on the back, and paused. No, too strong. Instead he gave him a fond pat, ruffling his fur gently. "Between the two of us, we should be more than a match for any of these things!"
He sprung to his feet, and stood tall, Orthrus standing confidently at his side. "Onwards, boy! We'll conquer this place one route at a time! Now, let's keep going! We need to build up our army!" After all, what was a king without an army? Just a figurehead. First, though, they needed to get to the next town. "We're on our way to Cherrygrove City! Let's go!"
He lifted his arm with a cry and rushed off, his faithful hound bounding behind him.
